CASE STUDY: Imagine Downtown
When a Community Unites, Imagine Downtown
It is not often that a large group of strong community leaders with diverse interests goes into a room and emerges with a clear and common vision. Yet that is precisely what happened during an 18-month stretch in 2005 and 2006 when business and civic leaders, government officials and staff, and a wide mix of other downtown stakeholders gathered several times to imagine a thriving future for downtown Colorado Springs. And Nor’wood was proud to sponsor such a participatory process that has resulted in a fully-functioning action plan for the city’s core.
Over a series of five day-long planning sessions, these committed participants gathered in a charette setting called Imagine Downtown, mapping out a downtown Colorado Springs that would mature into a thriving urban center, teeming with people from all life's stages moving between their homes and offices, favorite shops and restaurants. The downtown they aspired to influence would be built on industry, history and culture, and its architecture would be dense, dramatic and richly varied.
It wasn’t merely pie-in-the-sky dreaming. Together, they painted a picture of what downtown Colorado Springs could and should be, and that picture is coming to life at this very second.
